Coronavirus; the global emergency disease.

The world countries are making tremendous efforts to combat the existing but new surfaced coronavirus that originated from China which has now turned to a global emergency. The coronavirus has killed more than 350 people in china forcing the Chinese government to shut down about 20 cities in China with about 56 million people being quarantined.

Coronaviruses (COV) are known as the large family of viruses that causes illness ranging from common cold or flu to more severe diseases like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome –associated coronaviruses (SARS). Coronaviruses are zoonotic (diseases that are transmitted from animals to human beings). Coronaviruses are also known as  ''Wuhan virus, Wuhan coronavirus, Chinese virus, Chinese bug, Chinese Coronavirus". According to the Chinese authorities on January 7, 2020, a new named 2019-Novel Coronavirus  (CoV) was identified.

It was said to have originated from a seafood market in Wuhan city, Hebei province, China on December 31st, 2019, where wildlife was also traded largely according to Chinese health officials.

Causes of Coronavirus

  • People with comorbid diseases such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases among others.
  • Consumption of seafood.
  • Living in or traveling to the region where the virus is being spread.

Coronavirus can be contacted through the following means;

  • Close contacts such as handshaking or touching people.
  • Indirect contact with object or surface contaminated with the virus.
  • It can be transmitted through sewage and water.
  • Via respiratory droplets when an infected person sneezes or coughs.
  • Seafood consumption.
  • Visitation to someone infected with the virus

Incubation period:
The incubation period of coronavirus is idiopathic(unknown) but it is thought to be between 2 to 7 days.

Signs and symptoms of coronavirus.

The following signs should be watched out for which may appear in a few days as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure to the virus.

  • Coughing.
  • Difficulty in breathing.
  • High fever greater than 38.
  • Headache.
  • Feeling of discomfort.
  • Body ache.
  • Chest pain.
  • Sore throat.

Diagnosis of coronavirus

Laboratory tests using respiratory specimens and serum are used to detect coronaviruses in human beings.


Coronaviruses can lead to lower respiratory tract diseases such as bronchitis or pneumonia and this more prevalent in young children, older people and people with a suppressed or compromised immune system.

Prevention of coronavirus

The following measures can help to prevent the spread of Coronavirus and reduce its prevalence.
  • Proper and regularly hand hygiene with soap and water.
  • Use 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer if water is unavailable.
  • Sneezing and coughing should be done into tissues or flexed elbow.
  • Ensure safe food practices.
  • Avoid the consumption of raw or half-boiled animal products.
  • Avoid eating sick or dead animals meats or products.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Wear personal protective equipment when handling animals or animal products.
  • Do not travel if you have a fever or cough.
  • Wear a face mask and make sure that your nose and face are properly covered.
  • Use a single-use mask.
  • If fever, cough or diffusing-breathing is noticed, visit the health care facility immediately.
  • Avoid exposing family members to soiled work clothes.
  • Share previous travel history with medical personnel.
  • Ensure appropriate environmental hygiene.
  • Adopt infection control practices in all settings.
  • The government should ensure that all necessary government meant protective equipments for quick response to prevent the spreading of the illness are provided.
  • The health workers should use their personal protective equipment appropriately.
