Factors such as social, economic, political, nutrition and age among others have been propounded to influence the society's health positively or negatively.

A society's productivity is based on its human health, each member of the society is affected in one way or the other because each individual plays a different role that supports the growth of the society.

How is health defined? 

According to the WHO, health is defined as a state of complete, physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being and not merely absences of diseases". This implies that health is an absolute state but not all individuals can achieve the health level due to some physical or physiological differences.

An individual might be financially okay,no physical or physiological challenges, well-paid job but infertile; this kind of person is not healthy because he or she can contribute to the reproductive function of the society.

Factors that can affect one's health

In this twenty-first century, people are facing one health related or the other which is linked to various factors that affects their health status which can be internal (age,genetic make up and sex) and external (physical environment, culture and lifestyle).

 Age: Age has a strong link between individual and diseases faced. At each age developmental phase, different diseases are attached with it. For example heart diseases is common in middle-aged people, sexually transmitted infections (STI's) in young adults while communicable diseases like measles,malnutrition are found in children.

Genetic make-up: This influences an individual's biologic traits, temperaments and academics intellectual. It also put individuals at risk of some diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cancer, sickle cell anemia and down syndrome etc. Cancer and diabetes have been traced to family history.

Sex: Some disease conditions are more common in one sex than the other. Diseases such as fibroid, osteoporosis, asthma,breast cancer, obesity and autoimmune disorders are commonly found in females while disorders such as hernias,tuberculosis, liver cirrhosis and heart diseases are majorly found in males.

Research has shown that males tends to be more aggressive while females tend to be emotional and soft hearted due to hormonal differences like estrogen and progesterone.

 Lifestyle: Centre for Disease (CDC) reported that "people can live longer if they practice one or more healthy lifestyle behaviors which are not smoking, eating a healthy diet,getting regular physical activity and limiting alcohol consumption".

Individual/s lifestyle behaviors such as tobacco use, drugs and alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, over or underweight are predisposing factors to increase disorders rates like diabetes,heart diseases, lung problems, hypertension an liver diseases where by drugs abuse or misuse affects the central nervous system and Impaired neurological and psychological functions.

 Standards of living: Low or high standards of living (occupation, income,housing and education) are related to health improvement, morbidity and mortality.

 People of low standard of living are more prone to disease due to unhygienic environment, lack of good food intake and low income while those belonging to the high class can afford adequate meals,good income and the health care services provided.

 Nutrition: Hippocrates once said "let thy food be thy medicine and let thy medicine be thy food".

Individual's nutrition can be observed directly or indirectly on the body looking at how thick and full the hair is,mental and physical alertness, smooth and shinny skin are good health indicators while protruded abdomen,thin arms and legs, pluckable and brittle hair and muscles wasting indicates poor nutrition.

Different nutritional values is needed at each stage of development (pregnancy, lactation, infancy, toddler, adolescent, adults and aged).

 Culture: Cultural beliefs do affects one's health positively or negatively, because the life of the individual is built or woven round it. We are all influenced by culture " which is the total way of people's life that is passed from one generation to another ". Culture is universal but diversified due to the fact that each culture have their own pattern of living, eating habits, clothing, interactions and behaviors including health and illness perceptions, beliefs, treatments and cure.

For instance, some culture believe that illness are caused by witches, sorcerers or as a result of angers from gods, in these aspect sacrifices are been offered to appease them while some believes that pregnant or lactating women must not eat some certain types of food such as snail which they believe can make the child to be drooling while goat meat will cause the child to be stubborn and become a thief later in life.

Other factors are; Self concept, Family Personality, Geographical location / race

  1. Eat adequate diet (carbohydrates, proteins,fat and oils,vitamins and mineral salts)
  2. Adequate intake of water (up to 5litres per day) Engage in regular physical exercise
  3. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption Reduce intake of junks and sugary foods
  4. Regular blood pressure and blood glucose level checking Eat fresh fruits and vegetables
  5. Do not drink contaminated water or juices Regular sanitation of your environment
  6. Check sealed foods and drinks for expiry date
  7. Cultivate relaxation techniques habit (music, guided imagery, yoga or swimming)
  8. Avoid use of drugs without prescription including those that elevates one's mood (cocaine, heroine, alcohol, Tramadol among others)
  9. Regular hand washing Report any noticeable symptoms to your licensed health practitioners Have sleep between 7-8 hours per day
